Bronze Age Axes (900 - 800 BC)

These axe heads are from collections, called hoards, dating to the Bronze Age.

Hoards are important for what they tell us about Bronze Age life.

Axes were precious tools for Bronze Age peoples. They had a wide variety of uses - from cutting wood, to preparing meat, and self-defence. They may have even been traded as a form of currency. Axes were also used as ritual items, appearing to have been buried or deposited in rivers to mark their owner’s death or as offerings to the gods.
