Nepali Life in the North East
As part of this project, we have been working with Nepali communities in North East England.
In October 2023, the Nepali community in Catterick, North Yorkshire celebrated Dashain, the most important Hindu festival in Nepal. In this video, we hear about why community gatherings are important, and members of the community reflect on the role Mount Everest plays in Nepali identity.
After becoming involved in the Eternal Ascent exhibition project, Kul, one of our community volunteers rediscovered an old photograph of his grandparents. In this video Kul discusses his grandparents experiences and their connection to the Himalayas.

The flag of Nepal is the only non-rectangular flag in the world. The flag is decorated with a sun and a crescent moon against a red background symbolising bravery and Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendron, while the blue border represents peace. The moon symbolises the cool weather of the Himalayas and the sun, the heat of the southern plateau or Terai.
