Nepali Life in the North East

As part of this project, we have been working with Nepali communities in North East England.

In October 2023, the Nepali community in Catterick, North Yorkshire celebrated Dashain, the most important Hindu festival in Nepal. In this video, we hear about why community gatherings are important, and members of the community reflect on the role Mount Everest plays in Nepali identity.

After becoming involved in the Eternal Ascent exhibition project, Kul, one of our community volunteers rediscovered an old photograph of his grandparents. In this video Kul discusses his grandparents experiences and their connection to the Himalayas.

Item 1 of 5
A coloured photo of a flag which has two zig-zag shapes (which look like 90 degree angles) which meet a straight line to the left and a straight line to the bottom of the flag. The flag is red with a blue border which goes around the outline of the flag, in each of the zig-zag shapes there are two shapes.

The flag of Nepal is the only non-rectangular flag in the world. The flag is decorated with a sun and a crescent moon against a red background symbolising bravery and Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendron, while the blue border represents peace. The moon symbolises the cool weather of the Himalayas and the sun, the heat of the southern plateau or Terai.

Underneath the text is a pair of eyes with eyebrows that have a small circle between them and a red swirly shape coming down between both eyes, which is in the same red stitching and gold outline.

This t-shirt was loaned by the community for display at the Oriental Museum. It features a mountain design as the Himalayas are a prominent part of Nepali identity.

A coloured photo of a set of dark green half-finger gloves, attached to the gloves is a piece of fabric which when folded, it turns the gloves into a pair of mittens. There is a red, blue, purple and beige abstract pattern which goes around each glove and a red and blue zig-zag pattern which goes across the middle of the mittens.

These modern gloves are handmade in Nepal and would not have been dissimilar to examples the 1924 expedition team would have encountered in the Himalayas.

A coloured photo of a hat and a pair of matching ankle socks, the items appear to have been knitted using white, black and grey wool. The wool has been stitched into horizontal blocks using the different colours on both of the items, this gives them a striped effect.

Warm socks and hats are essential in the Himalayas as frostbite from the freezing temperatures can develop within minutes.
