2008 Beijing Olympics Mascots (Fuwa)

Fuwa Mascots

These are the Fuwa, the mascots from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Their designs are inspired by different animals and Chinese culture. Each of the mascots represents both a natural element and one of the colours of the Olympic rings.

Beibei is a fish, representing both water and the blue Olympic ring. Her design was inspired by artworks from the Yangshao culture (5000-3000 BCE).

Jingjing is a panda. He represents the forest and corresponds to the black Olympic ring. The lotus flowers on his head are similar to the ones found in Song dynasty (960-1279 CE) porcelain.

Huanhuan is inspired by the Olympic flame and the red Olympic ring. The flame in Huanhuan’s head is also derived from the heavenly fire depicted in the artworks of the Mogao caves in Northwestern China.

Yingying is a Tibetan antelope. He represents earth and the yellow Olympic ring. The ornaments on his head are inspired by the Tibetan and Xinjiang cultures.

Nini is a swallow, representing both the element of air and the traditional Chinese sport of kite flying.
